Gartner Research confirms Software Savings of up to 25% with Usage Metering

From Open iT’s customer experiences, savings are often in the 25% range the first year. “Our customers typically have a high ROI for an Open iT installation. With a highly flexible and user-friendly reporting tool, our customers can immediately identify software that is rarely used, decide whether users need to be trained on these applications, and make decisions to drive down costs,” says Stenseth. “It could mean a renegotiation of the type of agreement the vendor offers, or it could mean a new mix of applications that are needed – it’s basically about getting more technology that the company needs, for less or the same amount of money. So besides saving on software, it’s also about finding the mix of software to fit you business needs”. This customer experience is supported by recent Gartner research concluding that enterprises have much to gain from getting an overview of how they are using installed software licenses. This is important from a software audit point of view of mitigating the risk of being under-licensed, as well as avoiding ‘application sprawl’. Gartner analyst Patricia Adams concludes: “Substantial cost cutting opportunities exist in monitoring usage of purchased applications. Depending upon the level of maturity, enterprises that implement software usage capabilities will achieve savings of 5% to 25% in the first year. After the first full cycle of vendor contract negotiations, the savings will likely stabilize at 2-3% in subsequent years.”
