Software License Investment times 32= ROI

Case study presentation fills house at the PNEC 15th International Conference on Petroleum Data Integration, Information and Data Management.

Murphy Exploration and Production's Director for Upstream IT Business Systems, Jason K. Daigle, presented a winning case study for a full house at the recent convention in Houston, Texas. His case study was based on experience using Open iT usage metering tools, initially as a successful way to consolidate disparate IT assets during the merger of two large business units. Using the reorganization as an opportunity to create new strategic goals for developing more effective business processes, technologies and governance, Mr. Daigle spelled out the goals set for the Software Asset Management Foundation in 2008 as follows:

  • Establish a Business "Champion" at the highest executive level possible, to support IT strategies
  • Centralize the IT support organization, SPOC managing the software portfolio
  • Centralize the application portfolio, (see all resources)
  • Invest in software usage reporting tools (to see who uses software, how)
  • Establish effective standards for communication and accountability (with monthly usage reports)

Open iT LicenseAnalyzer was chosen to be used for metering Murphy Oil's software assets in 2008. An initial $43,000 investment was used to meter all Murphy's applications running on Windows, UNIX and Linux operating systems for two regions. Detailed information aobut expensive Geological, Geophysical and Reservoir engineering applications was presented in concurrent usage reports.By late 2009, the Exploration and Production office in Murphy Oil's Houston office had achieved tangible savings of over $1.3 million dollars. This success lead to the use of LicenseAnalyzer for company-wide software usage metering on a global basis.
